The re-elected MP for Newark, Mr Patrick Mercer, said the new coalition government between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats would be good for Newark.

Mr Mercer said he could now get things moving for Newark rather than being stonewalled by a Labour government.

Mr Patrick Mercer has increased the Conservative's majority in Newark to 16,152 votes and secured a third term in office.

Mr Mercer won the seat with 27,590 votes, ahead of Labour's Dr Ian Campbell on 11,438 and Liberal Democrat Mrs Pauline Jenkins on 10,246.

The Conservatives have taken Sherwood from Labour following a recount at the Dukeries Leisure Centre, Ollerton.

Mr Mark Spencer won 19,211 votes, just 214 ahead of Labour's Miss Emilie Oldknow with 18,997.

Former Chancellor Mr Kenneth Clarke held the Rushcliffe seat with an increased majority to extend his term in Parliament beyond 40 years.

Mr Clarke, who first won the seat in 1970, received 27,470 votes to win a tenth successive term. He increased his majority from a notional 9,932 in 2005 to 15,811, helped by a high turnout of 73.59%.

Southwell's Conservative county councillor Mr Bruce Laughton has failed to win the Gedling seat.

Mr Vernon Coaker retained the seat for Labour with a vote of 19,821.

Newark Conservative county councillor Mr Keith Girling has missed out on the Bassetlaw seat, which has been retained by Labour's Mr John Mann.

Mr Mann won 25,018 votes, a majority of 8,215 over Mr Girling, who came second with 16,803 votes.

Candidates are waiting for the Newark and Sherwood constituency counts to begin.

Counting is due to start soon at Kelham Hall where the Liberal Democrat candidate, Mrs Pauline Jenkins, was the first to arrive at 10pm.

Former Tory Chancellor Mr Ken Clarke has described this General Election as the most unpredictable he has ever known.

"We are in for a night that is going to be fairly unpredictable," said Mr Clarke, who is bidding to be re-elected in Rushcliffe for the tenth time in succession.

Polling stations opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm tonight.

The Conservative Party says it will call in police unless more than 800 missing election leaflets for its Newark candidate, Mr Patrick Mercer, turn up.

The leaflets were supposed to be delivered by Royal Mail to the NG14 area — the Trent Valley villages as far as Southwell including Hoveringham, Fiskerton, Morton, Bleasby, Goverton and Lowdham.

Mr David Cameron was in Nottinghamshire this morning on a 24-hour tour of Britain as the election campaign enters its final day.

Mr Gordon Brown has been visiting market workers in Leeds and will campaign in England and Scotland.

The Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, Sir George Young, joined the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Sherwood, Mr Mark Spencer, on his campaign trail on Wednesday.

The pair visited the Limes Café near Bilsthorpe on the A614, a black-spot for accidents, before meeting older people at the Green Centre, Bilsthorpe, and going to fishing lakes managed by volunteers, on the former Bilsthorpe colliery site.

Baroness Kinnock, a former MEP, was accompanied by the Labour candidate for Sherwood, Miss Emilie Oldknow.

Concerns over the future of services at Newark Hospital have again been raised as the General Election campaign enters its final week.

The Labour candidate for Newark, Dr Ian Campbell, this week criticised NHS Nottinghamshire County’s consultation over its proposals for the hospital, while the Conservative candidate, Mr Patrick Mercer, moved to oppose the proposed closure of the pharmacy.

A great-grandmother who turns 100 on the day of the election is preparing to vote. Mrs May Ellams, of Main Street, Morton — pictured looking at the Advertiser’s election coverage — plans to vote on her birthday, Thursday, May 6.

Since Mrs Ellams was born in 1910 there have been 18 prime ministers starting with Herbert Asquith and finishing with Gordon Brown.

In Newark the current MP, Mr Patrick Mercer, faces two opponents fighting a General Election for the first time, Labour’s Dr Ian Campbell and Mrs Pauline Jenkins, of the Liberal Democrats.

Mr Mercer, 53, will be hitting the campaign trail for the third time, having been first elected in 2001. He increased his majority to more than 6,000 in 2005.

Mr Paddy Tipping, who has been the Sherwood MP since 1992, is stepping down for health reasons. He suffered a heart attack last year.

The candidate chosen to defend his seat for Labour is Miss Emilie Oldknow, 29, of Mansfield, who grew up in Ravenshead and until a few years ago lived in Clipstone.

Parliamentary candidates in the Newark area will be hitting the campaign trail after the Prime Minister, Mr Gordon Brown, announced a May 6 General Election.

Mr Brown visited Buckingham Palace this morning to request permission from the Queen to dissolve Parliament and call an election.
