First crop on the menu
6:24am Fri Jul 30, 2010
The Mayor of Ollerton and Boughton, Irene Miller, dug up the first crop of potatoes at Ollerton Primary School.
Irene Miller harvests the potatoes with Reuben Tomlinson, 4, and Chantelle Wall, 6. (210710JT9-1)

The head, Mr Carl Braithwaite, said that the garden was used to show pupils the importance of local produce and healthy eating.

The potatoes were put on the school’s dinner menu the next day.

The vegetable garden was created at the beginning of April with the help of local volunteers. Many vegetables are grown including onions, carrots, pumpkins, tomatoes and broad beans.

All of the classes in school take turns in tending and picking the vegetables.

There is also a gardening club after school where parents can get involved.
