No one is perfect and Newark’s MP, Patrick Mercer, admits what he calls “a huge mistake” concerning an affair with a House of Commons secretary.

Most fair-minded people will regard the incident as a personal matter and not a political issue.

Patrick Mercer does not intend to re-ignite the personal problem by challenging a version of events that was set out in a Sunday newspaper.

His marriage is secure and his wife, Cait, has decided to remain Patrick Mercer’s chief supporter.

People will admire her generous stance and salute her fortitude. Patrick Mercer is a fortunate man.

He intends to get on with his important challenges as Newark’s MP and his work record so far will be weighed against the allegations that have been made. People will make up their own minds about his ongoing credibility.
