ATHLETICS:
David Baker of Newark’s Notfast Running Club ran The Bannatynes 10K multi-terrain event at Wellingborough on Sunday and, despite falling and getting covered in cold, sticky mud, he finished in a good cross-country time of 50mins 45secs.
His club-mates Lyn and Chris McDonnell ran The Folksworth 15-mile race as part of their training for The London Marathon. The course was an undulating two laps to the south of Peterborough and Chris finished in 1hr 55 mins 28secs with Lyn in 2-16-49.

ANGLING: The Newark Advertiser-sponsored Upper Witham Six-a-side Championships takes place on Saturday March 8. The draw is at the Wheatsheaf pub at Dry Doddington at 9am, the entry is £90 per team, and all entries must be given to Colin Walton by March 1.

CRICKET: Budding cricketers aged under 13 are being invited for trials for the Newark and Sherwood District squad.
Selection coaching sessions for both the under-11s and under-13s teams start at Southwell Leisure Centre on Sunday February 24, with further sessions every Sunday until April 6.
The trials, open to both boys and girls, will be from 1.30-3pm for the under-11s and 3-4.30pm for the under-13s and each session costs £2. More information is available on 01636 655701.

FOOTBALL: Soccersixes, who operate more than 150 six-a-side leagues across the UK, including one at Newark’s Magnus Sports Centre, have announced that a national cup competition is to take place in March, with 800 teams taking part across 16 different regions. Entries are on a first come, first served basis, and teams interested should phone 08703 300888.

MOTOR RACING: The Balfe Motorsport team will return to UK racing this year with a new car and new driver line-up as they tackle the new VdeV UK endurance series.
The squad will run a Norma M20F chassis in the series, with Caythorpe’s Shaun Balfe once again on driving duties alongside Adam Derbyshire, the brother of Balfe’s former British and FIA GT team-mate Jamie Derbyshire.
The calendar of events for the 2008 season will see the team head to classic UK circuits like Silverstone and Brand’s Hatch, as well as taking in the newly developed Anglesey circuit in Wales among a 20-plus field. There will also be the opportunity to race in one or two of the high-profile European events over the course of the season.
The VdeV cars are slightly smaller, but look similar to the prototypes that race at Le Mans, and are also incredibly quick, with the top machines reaching 150mph on some of the longer circuits and, with impressive aerodynamics and downforce, it will certainly be fast and close racing.

SQUASH: Dukeries Squash Club did the double over local rivals Nomads 4ths with a 3-2 win. Francis Waite came from behind to win 3-1; Neil Rogers lost 3-1; Paul Allan recorded his first victory of the season with a 3-1 success; Thea Harvey won 3-0; and Anthony Gregorik lost 3-1.
