Showing the way

The Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show is the traditional curtain-raiser for the English county show season.

The timing of the show — it is always held in early May — is an acknowledgment of its roots in the centuries-old Newark May Fair.

Year after year the modern show sets the standard in family entertainment and the promotion of agricultural excellence.

The farming community rightly takes pride of place and one of the show highlights is always the magnificent spectacle of prize-winning livestock filling the main ring for the grand parade.

But while countryside matters are the mainstays of the show, the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society works hard to ensure its showpiece event has a much wider appeal.

The show has cemented its place at the heart of the area’s social calendar.

Generations of families look forward to the two days at Newark Showground where there’s so much to see and do.

This year, with more than 200 trade stands and a long list of social events and attractions, there is sure to be something for everyone.

The floral arts pavilion will be awash with colour, the food hall is always a tasty proposition and there will be all sorts of displays from stunt bikes to falconry.

Younger show visitors will love the old-fashioned fairground rides and the artificial ice-skating rink.

The chief executive of the agricultural society, Mr Adrian Johnston, has issued the invitation: “There are many attractions for the family to enjoy and we hope that you will look around them to take as much advantage as possible of all there is to be seen.”

The county show is a perfect family outing right on the doorstep, so don’t miss it.

See you at the show.
