Southwell couple who began married life in Newcastle celebrated 65 years together on Thursday (April 30)
A couple who met in the early 1950s when both still in their teens celebrated 65 years of marriage on Thursday (April 30).
Thelma and Ken Hughes (pictured below) began married life in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where their daughter Anne was born in 1958.
In October 1961, they also had a son, Christopher.
In the spring of the following year, the family moved to Southwell, following Ken’s relocation through work.
The couple made many connections in the town.
While their children were young, Thelma regularly worked at Starkey’s with a friend, picking fruit.
She later became involved with Guiding, and co-ran 1st Southwell Guides for several years.
Ken managed Southwell Athletic Under 13s Football Team and became a volunteer in the Special Constabulary, reaching the rank of sergeant.
They were both regular church-goers, and made many friends there, through their attendance at, and involvement with, Holy Trinity Church.
In the early 1970s Thelma renewed her original training as a nurse, continuing in this occupation until her retirement in 1995.
By this time, the couple had moved to a village in Oxfordshire, where they were similarly active and well received.
A few weeks ago, the couple moved back to Southwell, for health reasons, and to be nearer to family.
They have been contacted by members of Holy Trinity who remember them from 35 years ago.
