Newark Advertiser looks back on how Newark and district celebrated the last coronation – of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953
The Advertiser has opened its photographic archive to look at how the district celebrated its last coronation more than 70 years ago.
Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne on February 6, 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI.
Her coronation took place more than a year later, at Westminter Abbey on June 2, 1953, to much celebration.
As well as street parties, Newark hosted a regatta, while staff at Ransome and Marles enjoyed a party on the sports ground.
There was also a large civic gathering in Newark Town Hall and a service in Southwell Minster to mark the occasion.
