The A1 is currently closed southbound after a lorry struck a bridge and a digger fell off the back

By Rachel Armitage

A lorry has struck a bridge on the A1 southbound at East Markham and shed its load, with the excavator that was on the back now blocking both lanes.

The A1 is now closed due to debris on the road and damage to Priestgate Bridge between the A57 Markham/Walesby junction and the B1164 Tuxford junction while a structural assessment of the bridge takes place, with Priestgate Bridge also closed.

There is now queueing traffic up past Upper Morton, and motorists are asked avoid the area if possible.

The roads are expected to remain closed for a long period of time.

Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed that there are not thought to be any injuries.
