Abandoned car on A617 between Newark and Mansfield becomes unlikely ‘tourist attraction’ with cheeky online reviews

An abandoned car that hasn't been moved from a roadside ditch since it crashed in September has become an unlikely tourist attraction - and even has Google reviews.

The blue Vauxhall has been designated a 'historical landmark' by jokers online who likened it to an art installation on the A617 between Newark and Mansfield at Kirklington.

Dubbed The Blue Car, it has garnered 14 five-star reviews on Google, including one wag who quipped: "It certainly is a blue car."

Residents say the motor has been dumped there since it crashed on September 10.

Blue and white police tape appears to be wrapped around the car and the hedge on the side of the 50mph road.

It is understood the driver was spoken to at the scene by police, but avoided serious injury.

The motor has since been abandoned as it is still awaiting removal by the registered keeper’s insurance company.

Now, witty commuters who drive past it daily have now added online reviews comparing it to an art installation.

One joked: "Nothing gives me more of a thrill then seeing that shiny blue paint and police tape, getting to drive past it every day is a real treat!"

A third said: "I’ve seen a lot of blue cars over the years but this is my favourite.

"So creative and not what you’d expect. A real pinch me moment when you first see it but then as you look closer you just think 'how did they do that?!'"

"Lots of activities for the kids to do, picnics, games, all sorts. Couldn't find the toilet so I just went in a bush nearby. Would definitely recommend to families or couples."

However, one warned: "Be aware that this is a temporary installation, so hurry to view, it may be gone, as early as next April."

The joker added: "Whilst in the area, the Telegraph Pole Stump in nearby Kirklington village is also worth seeing."

Another reviewer told users: "Modern art at its finest.

"The subtle draping of the “Police Aware” tape is a stark contrast with the vehicle position, which illustrates the “Driver Unaware” of the ditch."

"It’s ridiculously clean underneath. It’s crazy how far art has come, a modern day Stonehenge. Big respect to the team involved."

Another review read: "Absolutely picturesque landmark. The stunning blue colour stands out from the road! 10/10"

However, local Tom Williams said: “It’s been months and the car is still there.

"It’s become a joke in the village, but on a serious note there’s regular crashes going into the village and cars speed through constantly.

"Something needs to be done before someone is killed. The police and the council don’t seem to care. Maybe the blue car will increase our tourism footprint.”
