Plans for more than 30 affordable homes have been approved by district councillors

Plans for 33 affordable homes have been welcomed by councillors.

The proposal, by Minster Property Group Ltd, seeks to build six one-bed homes, 13 two-bed and 14 three-bed homes at Maltkiln Close, Ollerton.

However, the application wasn’t without its objections and, speaking at Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee meeting, member Lee Brazier said the development was not suitable for the area.

“The catchment area for families on the site is The Forest View Academy, and it is completely full. There are no places left,” he said.

“The proposal has far too many units for this plot of land when you think the plot next to it has just nine.

“There is also an average wait of three weeks for a doctors’ appointment. It is not really suitable.”

The popular opinion was affordable housing would improve the area, offering a cheaper alternative to residents.

Mr Michael Brown said: “It would benefit the area greatly. It is a large space that isn’t used for anything.

“They have been acute about re-planting trees and the actual development isn’t out of sort with anything around that area.

“We also say there isn’t affordable houses for local people, and we have 33 here, which is crying out.”

Eleven members voted for the proposal, while two voted against.
