Newark branch of Royal Air Force Association to stay open despite struggles with low membership numbers

Following last minute intervention, a historic veterans association has been saved from closure.

A special general meeting of the Newark branch of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) took place on Tuesday (October 7) to decide the branch’s future.

It comes as the branch continues to struggle to attract new members, and follows dwindling engagement from many existing members.

The branch also no longer has a permanent home, after their old building on London Road was taken on by the Newark Services Club in 2023.

After news of the meeting was shared, a number of members came forward in favour of keeping the branch open.

A vote was held, and following some discussion, members narrowly voted against closure, seven votes to six.

The existing committee then resigned and handed over organisational responsibility to a new committee, to be led by former chairman Allan Hildage.

Outgoing branch treasurer, Jerry Flint, said: “The decision was taken because of our history.

“People didn’t want to see the branch closed in what is its 80th year.

“The hope is we can go forward and attract new members and participation.”

Mr Flint wished the new committee luck.

The branch will continue to attend ceremonial events, such as the upcoming Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

However, some other aspects may be subject to change, such as the frequency of meetings, social functions, and trips.

The branch is now looking for new members, with the group open to all veterans or serving members of the RAF, Reserves, Royal Observer Corps, one of the Commonwealth Air Forces, or those former Air Cadets over the age of 18, and their family members.

Despite the threat of closure, RAFA Newark has enjoyed a successful 2025, in which they have attended many events, including Newark Armed Forces Day, Battle of Britain commemorations, and the annual Air Bridge Memorial Service; raised money for charity; and enjoyed group trips to the National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire, and the International Bomber Command Centre, in Lincoln.
