Children at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School, Edwinstowe, enjoyed an immersive Edwardian seaside experience with help from Nottinghamshire-based theatre company Partake History.

Children, dressed in their period finery, enacted a visit to the Edwardian seaside, beginning with packing their bags and boarding a steam train, and finally arriving at the seaside and taking a dip in the imaginary ocean.

Katy, 7, said: “I will remember this lesson for a long time because we all had lots of fun. We have been on a steam train and walked along the promenade and had lots of fun on the beach.”

Steven Adby, co-director of Partake History, delivered the workshop and said the lessons were about bringing history to life through drama.

He said: “It is aimed at a level where children can engage and lose themselves in drama and because they work as a group, no child has to stand out alone if they are unaccustomed to acting.

“Along with the props, the music we use helps to create an atmosphere adding to the drama of the story. I really hope that children have a lot of fun and learn a little more about the subject we are looking at, for example today, the Edwardian seaside. Our topics always link with the school curriculum and by taking part in the drama, and talking through the history, we create visual imagery for children which deepens their understanding and learning.”
