All-terrain car for first-aid events
A medical charity that provides first-aid for events in the Vale of Belvoir has now got a vehicle that enables them to drive off-road and respond quicker to emergencies.
Belvoir First Aid has expanded its capabilities for first-aid cover by getting a Howie all-terrain vehicle for use at events where off-road capability is essential, such as equestrian events and cross country runs.
The Howie will enable a fast response of key emergency equipment and medical support to casualties in woods, fields and across other rough terrain where the only previous option was walking.
It is the first time a Howie has been used for medical purposes in this country.
Used by the military, the Howie is a two-seat low centre of gravity car that can carry emergency medical equipment to the casualty.
Mr Ian Shepherd, secretary of Belvoir First Aid, said: “This Howie ATV is a unique tool for us and will allow us to offer better and more immediate care to the events we cover.
“It means that instead of sitting waiting for casualties to be brought to us, we can respond fast and more effectively in all types of situation.
“Time is often critical, and we think this unique offering is a major boost to our capabilities in supporting events in the Vale and Rutland area.”
Several ambulance services in the country are watching this development with interest.
To accompany the Howie, the group has also equipped a mountain bike as a fast response vehicle, equipped with first aid equipment and it is also possible to carry a defibrillator on the bike.
