Stage Four of Tour of Britain coming into Newark on Friday
Excitement is building as the elite cycling returns to the streets of Newark and Sherwood once again with stage four of the Tour of Britain.
On Friday, Newark will host the finishing line for stage four of the race in Sconce and Devon Park after the race passes through the towns and villages around the district.
This will be the fourth time the Tour has come through. Many shops and businesses have decorated their windows to mark the occasion, and leaders expecting a boost in visitors.
Newark and Sherwood District Council leader Paul Peacock, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain back to our district on Friday. It’s been really heartening to see so many local shops and businesses get into the spirit of the race.
“We urge visitors who are coming to see the race pass through our towns and villages to stay a while and enjoy what our local communities and independent retailers have to offer.
“It isn’t often that the public gets the chance to see international sports stars competing live without having to pay for the privilege.
“There will be Olympic medal winners and up and coming stars this year which will make the Tour even more special. Seeing live sport can be inspirational, who knows, maybe the medal winners of tomorrow could come from one of our towns or villages.
“We hope to see lots of people at the finish in Sconce and Devon Park, it was an amazing event last year, and should be again this year.”
A spokesman for Southwell Town Council said: “Southwell Town Council is delighted to be hosting part of the Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain.
“The bunting is up, the Town is decorated, and the excitement is building, we welcome visitors and residents to line the streets and cheer on the athletes.
“The route will be entering the town on Halam Road, passing by Lowes Wong School, Queen Street, King Street along the Burgage and out of town at Station Lane over the bridge at Greet Lily Mill.
“While road closures and parking restrictions will be in place, we aim to keep these to a minimum and welcome your support.”
Racing along the 86 mile route will get underway at 11am on Friday outside of the Derby Arena, in Derby, before passing through rural Derbyshire and entering Nottinghamshire at Eastwood.
Riders will travel through Hucknall, Ravenshead, and Blidworth, finding familiar surroundings on the roads of Southwell, Caunton, and Tuxford, before crossing the River Trent and heading south through Fledborough and Girton.
