80th anniversary of 1944 Warsaw Uprising to be marked at Newark Cemetery during annual Air Bridge Commemoration Service this Sunday September 29

This weekend a ceremony will be held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of one of the second world war’s most defining events.

Newark Cemetery will play host to the annual Air Bridge Commemoration Service this Sunday (September 29) in remembrance of the casualties of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.

During the uprising, which took place from August to October in 1944, Polish underground resistance attempted to liberate Warsaw and seize back control from Nazi occupation.

250 airmen lost their lives aiding resistance fighters during the Air Bridge operations, which will be commemorated during the ceremony which will be held in Newark for the 35th time.

The service will be held at the British Commonwealth and Polish War Graves section of Newark Cemetery, on London Road.

Guests and standard bearers will start to assemble at Thoresby Avenue from 1.45pm, before proceeding to the Air Bridge Memorial in the cemetery at 2pm.

The remembrance ceremony will then take place at 2.15pm, where speeches will be given and wreaths will be laid by people of different nationalities.

Refreshments will be served at the chapel after the service.
