Newark: Police arrest man after serious sexual assault of teenager in Balderton
Police have arrested a man after a report of a serious sexual assault in Balderton.
A teenage girl was approached by a man as she walked on the Sustrans off London Road at around 1.30pm yesterday (Wednesday).
She told police she was sexually assaulted near Balderton Bridge.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.
A cordon is in place to allow officers and crime scene investigators to examine the area for evidence.
Detective Sergeant Ruth Walker, of Nottinghamshire Police’s public protection team, said: “We know that these incidents are very concerning for the public and that is why we are doing everything we can to investigate this very serious matter.
“Although we have made one arrest, our investigation is at an early stage and I would urge anyone who has information about what happened to get in touch with us as soon as possible.
“The girl is being supported by specially-trained officers and we have also stepped up patrols to provide reassurance.
“We do not believe this to be a random attack as it is thought the two people were known to each other.”
