Nottinghamshire Police arrests two after drone drops drugs into HMP Lowdham Grange prison
Police officers made a rapid double arrest after hearing a drone had just dropped drugs into a prison.
Staff at HMP Lowdham Grange called the Nottinghamshire Police after discovering a package on the grounds, just after midnight yesterday (June 9).
The package — which contained bags of drugs and a selection of mobile phones — was reportedly flown over the prison walls using a drone.
Response officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and began a search of the area in a bid to find whoever had been operating the device.
Within minutes, the policing team spotted a suspicious vehicle in nearby Lowdham Lane and decided to pull it over.
When a drone and small quantities of suspected cocaine were then found on board, officers detained the driver of the car and the passenger too.
A 35-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were both arrested on suspicion of conveying a prohibited article into a prison.
The man was additionally arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs.
Detective Sergeant Nathan Bingham, said: “Thanks to the officers getting to the scene so quickly and using their initiative, they were able to achieve a positive result.
“Having received information from prison staff that a drone had just been used to fly a package over the walls, they quickly scoured the nearby area to find anyone who could be involved.
“That decision to go straight out onto the surrounding roads and search for suspicious activity led to them pulling over a car with a drone and drugs on board.
“Taking illicit substances, including drugs, inside a prison is an extremely serious offence that can cause a whole host of risks for both inmates and prison staff alike.
“This is clearly not acceptable, and anyone found to be involved in doing this should expect to find themselves in trouble.”
