Ask for Newark

I would like to respond to the concerns regarding services at Newark Hospital raised by D. Hinchley (Growing Concern, News Views, March 15).

Firstly, it is great to see people taking the time to raise their concerns and demonstrating the importance of the hospital to the local community.

Newark Hospital is an important part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and we are focused on Newark patients being able to access healthcare services locally by further developing the services offered at the hospital.

More people attended our clinics during 2017-18 than ever before and we now offer appointments for more than 30 specialties, including paediatric clinics within The Bramley Children’s Unit.

Our range of day case surgery covers eight specialties including urology, ophthalmology, surgical podiatry and orthopaedics, for which we provide a specialist shoulder, hand and wrist service.

Last month we welcomed two new surgeons to our team who are specialists from Royal Derby Hospital and Nottingham University Hospitals, increasing our surgery capacity further.

During the last year we have developed our medical day case service, which has enabled patients to receive regular treatment locally for rheumatology, gastroenterology and haematology conditions, avoiding the need to travel to other hospitals for this care.

We also have an excellent, purpose-built, endoscopy suite and diagnostics facilities and access to a range of scans and tests on site including CT, MRI, X-ray and breast screening.

Our facilities are some of the best in the region and last year the hospital achieved top scores in a national assessment for cleanliness, putting us among the best in the country.

We are also proud to have gone 12 months without a single hospital-acquired infection, which is a fantastic achievement.

The recent NHS Staff Survey rated us as the fourth best hospital in the country for staff satisfaction with the quality of work and care that we provide.

We do not always get things right and in response to patient feedback we have recently addressed some issues with patients not always being offered Newark for services we provide here.

This frustrates me as much as anyone and feedback from patients is very helpful in improving access to, and the quality of, our services.

I am happy to receive comments directly and encourage patients to post their feedback, positive or critical, on careopinion.org.uk

We do more at Newark Hospi-tal than many people realise, so next time you or your family require healthcare I encourage you to ask for Newark. — ANT ROSEVEAR, assistant chief operating officer for Newark Hospital.
