Back to business for Newark auction house Gascoine's as covid-19 restrictions are eased

A Newark auction house can hold the first sale of the covid-19 pandemic on its premises following a government dictate that such establishments can re-open with adequate safety measures in place.

Gascoine's Auction Centre has been operating online sales during coronavirus.

Potential purchasers have been viewing pictures representative of what they are buying as the goods themselves have remained boxed in storage with the site off Manners Road shut down.

For the first time since lockdown, an auctioneer can be present in the auction room bringing the hammer down on sales.

Going under the hammer on Thursday from 10am will be 800plus items of modern furniture from some of the UK's top brands.

Bidders are still encouraged to join the sale remotely, but a certain number could be allowed in the saleroom with appointments for viewings permitted ahead of the sale.

Viewings could be undertaken in a similar way to how queueing and social-distancing happens at supermarkets, but with no touching of the lots.

Commission bids can be left too.

The exact mechanics of the auction, including the necessity for PPE and hand sanitisers, are still being finalised.

Sales will take place every Thursday.
