Backing for diocese office plan

Plans to build eco-friendly offices in the grounds of a prebendal house have been unanimously supported by Southwell Town Council.

The plans for Dunham House, on Westgate, which include converting the house into five two-bedroom apartments and one one-bedroom apartment, were praised as a model application at last week’s planning committee meeting.

The house, in the conservation area, has been used by the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham as its headquarters since 1977. Its plans for the site will cost around £2m to implement, if approved.

Mr Roger Dobson thought the plans would be a significant improvement.

“It is a model application, extremely thorough, and it will certainly enhance the area,” he said.

“It will create a real harmony between the old prebendal house and the new office. We were very pleased to support it.”

Under the plans, the existing 1960s extension and public toilets that form part of the boundary wall on Westgate would be demolished.

The new offices would be built in three tiers to fit into the natural slope of the hillside by the house. It will be set back to reduce views of it from Westgate, and trees planted to screen it from the house.

Environmentally friendly features would include a green roof and triple glazed glass.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has the final decision.
