Backing has been given for seven council houses to be built in Southwell.

Plans have been submitted by Newark and Sherwood Homes to build three two-bedroom and four one-bedroom houses on a garage site at Norwood Gardens.

The homes would be available for those on a waiting list who are most in need of affordable housing.

The proposal was supported by the town council planning committee on Tuesday.

The committee chairman, Mr Brendan Haigh, who did not vote because he is also a district councillor, said they would be the first council houses to be built in Southwell for about 30 years.

Mr Haigh said the application would provide genuinely affordable homes, meeting a real need in the town.
