Reader's letter: Bad idea

More news, no ads

Although it seems logical for the cattle market to relocate to Newark Showground, I cannot imagine the move being a sensible one for the lorry park.

The drivers come into town to buy food and drink and to relax a little socially during their break from being in a small cab driving for many hours, often alone.

The showground is a bit out on a limb.

The last time I went to a small exhibition/sale held in just one building at the showground, I sat in stationary traffic for 1½ hours just to get in, with no possibility of being able to abandon the idea and leave the queue. It was the same on leaving.

Presumably a lorry park would have to have a dedicated entrance or it couldn’t possibly work with the amount of traffic clogging up all the surrounding roads for hours on end every time there is an event on.

The lorries would never get in or out and the drivers would all lose their jobs.

Instead of costly feasibility studies why not ask all the visitors to the next showground event what their thoughts are, It should be easy and give everyone something to do while they’re all sitting in their cars waiting to get in. — A. KEENE, Newark.
