Small number of Travellers remain at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre following today's eviction

Just three caravans remain on the carpark of a leisure centre this evening after bailiffs moved on to the site to enforce removal of a group of Travellers.

More than ten caravans, camper vans and associated towing vehicles had occupied the carpark of Newark and Sherwood District Council's Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, off Lord Hawke Way, illegally for several days.

Council leader David Lloyd said: “The district council immediately responded to reports, undertook the necessary checks and initiated legal proceedings.

"Using powers under trespass law, we have been able to serve notice on the Travellers requiring them to leave.

"The notice requiring them to leave was served early yesterday (Monday) and bailiffs have attended site today to enforce the removal.”

As of 5.30pm, bailiffs remain at the scene while three caravans appeared to be awaiting the return of their towing vehicles.

Several children were playing amongst the discarded rubbish left by the group in the carpark while their mothers seemingly readied the caravans for departure.

A large amount of rubbish has been left on the carpark, particularly its boundaries.
