A desserts shop is in the running to be named Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2019.

Home Bake, on Queen Street, Southwell, is on a 25-shop shortlist to be Britain’s Best Small Shop of 2019.

Home baker Helen Netherwood, who opened the shop in 2016, said making the shortlist came as a sweet surprise.

“I have been bursting to tell people we have made the finals,” said Helen.

“We entered in September before we went on holiday and we came back to the good news, but we weren’t allowed to tell anybody until now.”

Helen (pictured) has been baking for as long she can remember and has a degree in food science.

Mark Walmsley, chairman of the independent retailers confederation, which organised the competition, said: “Independent retailers are the lifeblood of UK high streets.

The winner of the competition will be announced at an event at the Houses of Parliament on November 5.

“We are up against some really great shops, so I’m very open about what will happen,” said Helen.
