Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Green Champions scheme to enocurage voluntary litter pickers to clean up communities as part of Great Big Green Week
A council has launched a new scheme inviting residents who are passionate about improving the area in which they live to become community litter pickers.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Green Champions scheme is aimed at making a difference to the environment across the district one small step at a time as part of Great Big Green Week.
Although it is simple, litter picking can make an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, and residents who join the scheme will receive all the necessary equipment to carry out regular voluntary litter picking —including bags and high-vis vests, and council will collect the litter which has been gathered.
Matthew Finch, director of communities and environment at Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The district is no stranger to the incredible impact of collective action and has already witnessed the power of community spirit through previous voluntary litter picks, and what better time to announce our Green Champions scheme, than during Great Big Green Week.”
“By becoming a Green Champion you’re helping create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for our district and are helping to make Newark and Sherwood a place for everyone to enjoy.”
Green Champions builds on the success of other voluntary schemes such as The Great British Spring Clean earlier this year, where teams of volunteers, park staff and residents came together.
Through the spring clean over 300 bags of rubbish were collected and then picked up by the council’s street scene team. In addition, well over 50 individuals have been out litter picking on a regular basis, with one volunteer collecting over 150 bags alone this year
Great Big Green Week is the UK’s largest event for climate and nature, aiming to raise awareness and encourage communities to take action against climate change, and make sustainable changes for a positive impact long term.
