A bee farmer has been left devastated after six of his hives were set on fire.

Mariusz Chudy, of bee farm Goldendrops at East Bridgford, was shocked to find many of his bees dead after the attack on Saturday, which is believed to have been deliberate.

Mariusz said: "On one farm I had bad surprise today. All hives had petrol poured on them. Six bee families have definitely died.

"I won't even mention all of the equipment that was destroyed. I know one thing, no one goes on a walk with a canister of petrol. This must have been planned.

"Thank God it was humid otherwise the fire would have spread further down the farms."

Bee Farm Goldendrops is part of Farmeco, a community care farm off Lodge Lane in Screveton.

David Rose, who owns the farm, said: "At FarmEco we do all we can to engage with the community and wider public to allow everyone the opportunity to see what farming and rural life is all about.

"We are a hub for many different activities and individuals who run workshops and run their business from our farm.

"This incident has upset the whole community and some are concerned about running activities on the farm now this has happened, we are trying to encourage everyone to continue and still run our open day on September 5.

"Bees are so important to our farm we have 60 acres of wild bird and nectar rich areas on the farm to provide habitat for wider biodiversity but especially for bees."

Mariusz is now appealing for donations so that he can start re-building what he has lost.

Aleksandra Chudy, Mariusz's daughter, said: "My dad is just a bit worried that this might happen again. We have been shocked because that farm is one that we don't really advertise and it's not open to the public.

"To him, bees are like family. Sometimes we get mad at him because he spends more time with the bees than us."
