Bikers urged to be seen

Free fluorescent backpacks and vests for motorcyclists will be available from Newark Police Station from today.

They are being provided by Nottinghamshire Road Safety Partnership as part of the week-long Think Bike Campaign.

The head of the roads policing unit, Chief Inspector Andy Charlton, said they strongly recommended motorcyclists wore bright and reflective clothing every time they rode their bikes on the road even during summer months.

So far this year four motorcyclists, including a pillion passenger, have died as a result of road accidents in the county.

He said the summer months had already seen an increase in serious injury collisions involving motorcyclists, with 22 in May and June.

The free backpacks and vests are available while stocks last.
