Rushcliffe residents could be charged for extra wheelie bins if money-saving ideas discussed by the borough council this week are approved.

The council is considering ways to save £1.2m in the 2010-11 financial year.

Managers have identified £76,000-worth of savings without affecting services, but the rest of the money must come from elsewhere.

On Tuesday cabinet members recommended suggestions previously raised through consultation with residents, and recommended a borough council tax charge of £113.22 for Band D properties, an increase of £1.98 on last year.

Ideas included private sponsorship on litter bins, wheelie bins, road islands, vehicles and planters, plus a £25 charge per year to residents who request an additional green bin.

The final decision on the options will be made by full council on March 4.
