Newark and Sherwood Labour Group adopt Black Lives Matter statement in response to public outcry over American George Floyd's murder
A statement recognising the Black Lives Matter movement has been adopted by the Newark and Sherwood Labour Group in response to public outcry over the American George Floyd's murder.
Leader Paul Peacock said the Labour Group needed to reaffirm its commitment to the fight against any form of discrimination and prejudice.
"We are committed to a society built upon fairness, inclusivity and tolerance," said Mr Peacock. "It is so important that local representatives of all political persuasion are fully committed to this."
Newark and Sherwood District Labour Group said it would: "Stand in total solidarity with the family, friends and community of George Floyd right across the world and against anti-black racism. The killing of George Floyd is further evidence of the abhorrent racism that still exists across societies and institutions today. This injustice must be condemned, and the abuse of power must end now.
"We reject racism in all its forms, and its devastating impact on the lives of Black and Minority Ethnic communities. As anti-racists it is incumbent on us all to denounce and address systemic racial discrimination.
"We will continue to passionately stand up for equality and social justice and will speak out against discrimination and oppression whenever and wherever it occurs."
