Nottingham Arts Theatre and The Phoenix Press have published new book Divine Mountebank, written by Nottingham poet, playwright and theatre director Campbell Kay on Sir Donald Wolfit
A new book detailing the life of one of Newark’s most famous faces has been launched.
Nottingham Arts Theatre and The Phoenix Press have published their latest book Divine Mountebank, written by Nottingham poet, playwright and theatre director Campbell Kay about great actor-managers Sir Donald Wolfit.
Sir Donald was known as the last of the great actor-managers. Born in Newark, he appeared in the West End, at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Old Vic, on radio and television and in films and, with his own touring theatre company, brought Shakespeare to the masses.
Renowned for his over-the-top acting style and his larger than life personality, he ranked with Gielgud, Olivier, Redgrave and Richardson as one of the leading theatrical knights of the 20th century.
All proceeds from the sale of Divine Mountebank go to support the educational work of Nottingham Arts Theatre, which receives no public funding or subsidy being reliant on its income from theatre hire, individual gifts and legacies, donations from like-minded charities and ticket and merchandise sales.
Divine Mountebank is available for £7.99 from Five Leaves, 14a, Long Row, Swann’s Yard, Rough Trade, 5 Broad Street, and The Pride Shop, at 65 Maid Marian Way.
