Reader’s letter: Book is a fine tribute
I was sad to learn that Ian Shipley, the gravedigger has died.
Years ago my sister and I were walking through Newark Cemetery when we saw him digging a grave. We stood to watch and he engaged us in conversation, telling us about his job and that he had written a book about it.
When I asked him how I could obtain a copy he directed us to his van, which was parked nearby, took out a copy of his book and after signing it at my request, gave it to me.
On taking it off my bookshelf today I discovered I had inserted an impressive two-page article from a newspaper about him too.
I am so pleased I have his book. I would recommend it as a great read written by a lovely man.
RIP Ian and condolences to his family. — S. ST JAMES, Long Bennington.
