Branching out for jubilee

Pupils at Maun Infants’ School, Ollerton, got their hands dirty planting 100 saplings as part of a project to plant six million trees nationwide ahead of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The children planted the 30cm tall hedgerow saplings with the help of teachers and parent volunteers.

The saplings, which will eventually form a hedgerow around the school fence, were supplied by The Woodland Trust, which is running the project.

One hundred more will be planted later this year.

Pupils also made leaf-shaped bunting, which will be hung in the school, which holds Gold Green Tree status in recognition of its environmental activities.

Teacher Mrs Beth Carrott said: “They all had a great time digging holes and planting the trees. As a green school it will also be good to have the hedging to make the fence look more attractive.

“It is exciting to be involved in the jubilee preparations, and the hedgerow will be a memory for many years to come.”
