Newark Advertiser reader letters: Bringing attention to the below par state of our roads

Anyone for a round of golf? I only ask because with the below par state of our roads we have more than enough holes to keep us busy almost indefinitely!

While I applaud efforts by Nottinghamshire County Council in recent months to carry out large scale road repairs — such as the Great North Road, finally — these efforts are merely the tip of an iceberg of work that is needed to restore our county’s crumbling infrastructure.

Many of the bone rattling roads that have been resurfaced had caused drivers problems for years, and there are still many more that need such work.

My concern now is that smaller streets and rural roads may be ignored. Just driving around Newark, I have often had to swerve to avoid the cavernous craters for fear of blowing a tyre or cracking my car’s suspension.

So what can be done? Quite simply, we need to keep reporting the problems. Keep reporting until they can’t be ignored.

It’s all well and good to complain on social media — or write to the local paper — but we also need to put in the effort and drive home the message that we will not tolerate borderline dangerous roads.

If they don’t listen? Well, I’ve seen a number of ingenious ways to bring unwanted attention to the pothole issue elsewhere in the country, including a gang of grannies spray painting penises around them.

For me, I think I’ll play a round of golf. So why not grab your putter and join me on the green.
