Building hope

There is a real sense of optimism that money will be found to pay for the Grove School, Balderton, to be rebuilt. It is in the worst state of all secondary schools in Nottinghamshire and is rightly at the top of the county council’s list in its bid for a share of the Government’s £2bn Priority School Building Programme.

It’s a big step forward for campaigners who have pushed the case for the Grove since hopes for a rebuild under Building Schools for the Future were dashed.

The MP for Newark, Mr Patrick Mercer, says he would be amazed if the Government did not carry forward “a comprehensive programme of improvement for the Grove.”

There can be no doubt that the Grove must be rebuilt. A second Government rejection is unthinkable.

Take a trip out into the countryside and all too often you will come across a pile of household waste dumped in woodland, a gateway or hedgerow.

Sadly, the scourge of fly-tipping is there for all to see. We live in a throw-away society and some unscrupulous individuals don’t care what they dump or where.

It has an impact on everyone because the clean-up costs fall on taxpayers and private landowners.

The latest example saw rubbish strewn over a half-mile stretch of Holme Lane, Winthorpe.

There is a warning for everyone here because householders can be fined if they have not taken care to pass waste on to a licensed waste carrier.

If material from your property is fly-tipped, you could be liable and could be fined.

Dispose of it via a licensed waste carrier and help stop the countryside becoming even more of a rubbish dump.
