Balderton man is retiring from Huws Gray, Newark after 35 years of work
A man is retiring from a builders’ merchant after 35 years in the industry.
Mick Hudson (pictured) of Balderton, started working in the industry when he was 15.
He worked for Jackson’s for 17 years before working for Huws Gray, where he worked for the last 35 years until retiring from its Newark Buildbase branch.
Over the years Mr Hudson experienced most roles in the industry, from yard work, to sales, driving and his latest role as plumbing and heating manager.
“It’s a big step, from being busy five and a half days a week to relaxing but I am looking forward to it,” said Mr Hudson.
“I think what I will miss the most is my friends, because you got friends at work as well.”
Future plans with his partner are potentially moving to the coast where they can enjoy the “relaxed atmosphere” in which he can fish, one of his favourite hobbies since he was seven.
Luke Sheppard, the Newark branch assistant manager, said: “It is not only a big personality that we are going to lose but the boots that you can’t really fill.
“For us to lose Mick as well as the strong relationships he has got with his customers as they have been coming to see him for as long as he’s worked here, you lose that aspect of it as well.
“It’s going to be a big loss, but ultimately, it’s time for him to go and we wish him all the best when he does go.”
Mick will retire tomorrow but promises to return to visit his colleagues.
