The Bramley Apple Festival will be taking place at venues across Southwell tomorrow
The Bramley Race at Southwell Racecourse launched the latest Bramley Apple Festival, which takes place this weekend.
The winner of the nine-horse race was Bill The Butcher, trained by Des Reape, who received a Bramley tree and basket of apples as well as the prize money.
A host of organisations will take part in the Bramley Apple Festival at venues across Southwell on Saturday.
It is in tribute to the famous apple that was first grown in the town.
Nottingham Trent University has arranged for visitors to see the original Bramley apple tree in Easthorpe.
This year’s events range from apple-themed activities at the National Trust’s Southwell Workhouse to the popular Festival of Food and Drink in the minster that features cookery demonstrations and more than 30 stalls representing the best of local produce.
“We are all really excited about the return of the Bramley Apple Festival,” said Glenn Formoy, head of marketing and events.
“Southwell is famous throughout the land for its stunning minster and for being the home of the Bramley apple so to be able to combine them for one day a year is fantastic.”
There will also be a display of apples from John Hempsall’s Heritage Orchard in the minster while the Archbishop’s Palace and Education Centre will host apple-related children’s crafts and trails around the garden.
The Minster School Ceilidh Band will perform the Bramley song at the opening of the food festival in the minster, which will be carried out by the Bishop of Nottingham and Southwell, the Right Rev Paul Williams, at 10am.
Festival leaflets are available at various venues throughout the town.
