May 2, 1997

CHILDREN at a Southwell private day nursery received a treat when Postman Pat popped in to make a surprise delivery to celebrate the nursery’s first anniversary.

NEWARK has a Labour MP for the first time in 18 years.

As dawn broke today, Mrs Fiona Jones overturned a Conservative majority of 8,229 to finish ahead of Mr Richard Alexander by 3,016.

Mrs Jones described it as an historic night for the Labour Party.

“We have come out of the shadows and we are ready to lead the country,” she said.

THE success of Olympic gold medallist rowers Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent has led to a growth of the sport in Newark and the town’s rowing club needs to expand its premises.

Newark Rowing Club has submitted a planning application to build a new boathouse. With 60 active rowing members ­— a 20% increase on last year ­— and only 15 boats, there is also a need for more vessels.

COBBLER Roy Williams completed the most unusual job of his 35-year career. Mr Williams, who owns a shop on Bridge Street, Newark, was asked to make a boot for 38-year-old Jack. The problem was Jack is a donkey, now a little long in the tooth and a little hoof sore.

NEWARK AIR MUSEUM was host to a Channel Four film crew for a documentary on the history of Britain’s nuclear industry and first atomic bomb.

They knitted all morning, had a picnic lunch on the war memorial recreation ground, knitted again in the afternoon, and then went for a swim.

A BALDERTON woman dying of a heart attack had to make a 20-mile journey from her home to Nottingham City Hospital because the emergency unit at Newark was closed due to staff shortages.

Her husband said he could not help wondering if she would still be alive if she had been able to have immediate treatment at Newark.

He called for pressure to be put on for the emergency unit at Newark to be retained.

MISS Alice Ransley has retired from her Newark greengrocery shop at the age of 88.

She opened her shop on the corner of South Parade and Sherwood Avenue more than 50 years ago, and she owned it until two weeks ago, when she sold it.

She said she would still be working if an accident hadn’t put her in hospital.

MEALS ON WHEELS organisers in the Newark rural district are being asked by the council to increase their charges from 7½p to 8p a meal.

100 YEARS AGO

May 3, 1922

A SPECIAL and private meeting of Newark Town Council was held and after considerable discussion it was decided to provide work for 100 men for three weeks.

The work includes such matters as roads, improvements to the castle grounds, painting of street lamps, laying of water mains, and cleaning up of the old tip.

THE unemployment returns of the Newark Labour Exchange were: 782 men, 87 women, 87 boys and 63 girls, and on short-time 24 men, six boys and four women.

FIFTY years’ work in connection with the Sunday School Union was reviewed on Monday when the President, Mr W. E. Knight, and Miss E. Knight entertained the teachers of the Newark Sunday School Union to tea in the Wesleyan Schoolroom.

A TEA was given by Miss Benwell in the Church Schoolroom, Balderton, for members of the Mothers’ Meeting. About about 60 members and friends were present.

A musical programme had been arranged, which was much appreciated. During the evening games were indulged in, which were enjoyed by all.

SOUTHWELL St Mary’s Football Club concluded a very successful season by playing Newark Baptists on Lowe’s Wong and followed this with a tea and social evening in Trebeck Hall.

MR SECRETARY MALIN is to be congratulated on arranging with Leicester City to send their Central Alliance team, which has won the championship, to Newark.

Leicester are sending a very strong team and Newark will again try several new players.
