Reader’s letter: Bypass will not ease congestion
Since April 2024 the cost of the A46 Newark Bypass project has been £686.4m. It was previously £500m. This is a rise of 37%.
A majority of the Newark Town Council planning committee opposes this proposal as being too costly, with serious problems around construction which will allow more traffic to bypass and so increase traffic long-term and associated pollution rather than addressing better public bus transport.
If the inquiry were to find in favour of the scheme, I remain concerned about this, it’s going to be a nightmare.
I can’t see Newark A46 bypass reducing the traffic queues, particularly on Friday afternoons and when there is an event on at Newark showground.
I do not think the scheme as it currently stands will do that.
Newark Showground will always have long-term traffic problems in years to come. — LAURENCE GOFF, Newark town councillor.
