Macmillian Cancer Support coffee mornings held across Newark district for good cause




People across the district have been busy baking to help raise thousands for charity through coffee mornings.

All over the UK, groups, businesses or individuals took part in the annual fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, which helps those living with cancer.

From Newark, Fernwood, Tuxford, Edingley to Weston, thousands of pounds have been raised from Thursday to Saturday.

Natalie Evans, who has been organising coffee mornings for several years, raised more than £2,500 in memory of her uncle, Martin, who recently died.

Natalie and her family hosted the event at Hardy’s Farm Shop at Farndon on Saturday (September 30).

“We were not going to go ahead but I am glad we did it, it was quite an emotional day but I knew we made the right choice,” said Natalie.

Meanwhile, more than 600 people made their way to Hall Farm Wild Bird Supplies for a day of fun.

Coffee morning activities included a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

Stalls also had a chocolate tombola, water or wine and the knitting group sold handmade pieces.

Kathryn Gilmor, office administrator at Hall Farm said: “The event was brilliant. Everybody had a really nice time and were really generous which is so good for this well-worth cause.

“So many businesses supported and costumers were in and out the whole day, it really was a community team effort.”

Residents and staff at Edingley Lodge care home, Edingley held a Macmillan coffee morning on Thursday (September 28).

The head chef had baked cakes, biscuits and pastries for everyone to sample, and for guests to buy to take home.

Some residents had baked cakes and biscuits for the occasion too along with their visitors and members of the community, so everyone was spoilt for choice.

Jilu Stephen, the home’s general manager, said: “Our Macmillan coffee morning has been a huge amount of fun, everyone at the home is always keen to support this fantastic charity in any way we can.”

Around 20 families and visitors attended Tuxford Manor’s coffee morning on Tuesday of last week.

The annual event raised £146 while residents enjoyed cakes and buns and a family catch-up.

Christian Mason, the registered manager, said: “We do the coffee morning annually as it’s such a great pleasure for a worthy cause

“Family said was lovely to all get together and raise so much awareness for such a fantastic cause and staff said was a good team builder “

Fernwood’s Welcome Break service station held a coffee morning on Friday, which raised over £300.

A stall was in the building with plenty of cakes and biscuits for visitors and workers to buy and donate towards.

A game of guess how many mint chocolate balls were in the cake proved a popular attraction on the day.

Suthers School in Fernwood hosted the event on Saturday, which was open to students and parents.

There was a cake sale and a raffle with prizes from businesses from the area.
