Call for residents to join day of action
Residents are being urged to help with a day of action involving a major clear-up of two parts of Newark.
Yorke Drive and Winthorpe Road will be the focus of a day-long programme a week tomorrow, August 30, tackling litter, dog fouling and fly-tipping as part of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s Cleaner, Safer And Greener campaign.
Council chief executive Mr John Robinson will join waste management teams and staff who have volunteered as part of a new policy that allows them to give a day a year to voluntary and community projects.
There will be a deep cleanse of both areas with street sweeping, litter picking and clearing of fly-tipping.
Residents are asked to take part in community litter-picks behind Brunel Drive, Strawberry Hall Lane and the Bridge Community Centre area.
Bridge ward district councillors Gill Dawn and Irene Brown will join the litter-pickers.
Gill Dawn said: "The campaign is a wonderful initiative and the day of action is a positive opportunity for residents to become involved, help make a difference and see close-up the work the council is doing."
To enable the work to be carried out thoroughly some motorists will be asked to park elsewhere on the day.
The day will involve clearing and tidying parks and open spaces, replacing litter bins, a check on anti-social behaviour issues, and advice to shops on food safety and licensing.
There will be advice on responsible dog ownership, stray dogs and fouling.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue will carry out home safety checks and offer fire safety advice.
Anyone wanting to be involved in the litter pick can email customerservices@nsdc.info or call 01636 650000.
