Caravans have been pictured at land off Main Street in Balderton where plans for a Traveller site have been submitted.

Machinery was spotted at the site on Wednesday, September 3. It showed construction equipment including a digger and shovels — with one person holding a drill.

The Advertiser has been contacted by concerned residents who feared work had already started despite planning permission not yet being granted.

Roger Blaney, Newark and Sherwood District Council planning committee chairman, said: “The council is aware that works have been undertaken to change the use of vacant land for the siting and occupation of caravans and that as of today (Thursday) the land is now being occupied.

"The land currently has planning permission for six apartments, however an application for planning permission for the ‘Material change of use of land for stationing of caravans for residential occupation with associated development (new access, hard standing, utility block) part retrospective’ has been received, is being considered and will be determined in the normal way.”
