Ben Walker's Beaumond House Community Hospice fundraiser brings in more than £3,500

More than £3,500 has been raised for a Newark charity after a personal trainer completed a gruelling five-day challenge.

Ben Walker, 37, of Newark, walked ten miles a day while carrying a 25kg rucksack — an activity known as tabbing in the military — in a bid to raise £500 for Beaumond House Community Hospice.

But Ben smashed his fundraising goal by the end of the challenge and even upped the weight in the rucksack to raise extra funds.

“It was horrible,” said Ben, who spoke after finishing his fourth stage.

“The hot weather made it ten times worse.

“You can train to a point when carrying the weight, but you can’t train for the conditions.

“You can’t train for the deterioration of where the burgen rubs either.”

He completed his final walk in the afternoon and was met by supporters at Devon Park, having raised £3,545.

He said it was an incredible amount of money to raise, having only targeted £500 in setting the challenge.
