Newark Lovers' Lane School challenge has pupils reading in odd places
On a rooftop, in a bubble bath and upside-down were some of the places children chose to read their favourite books during a challenge set by their school.
Determined to raise the profile of reading as both an essential life skill and as a source of pleasure, Lovers’ Lane School in Newark asked pupils to submit photographs of themselves reading books in unusual places.
For the half-term challenge, children were encouraged to think about different, exciting, fun and safe places where they could enjoy a book.
Their choices included the sea, a bridge, playground equipment and even in an open washing machine door.
The pictures were shared on daily Facebook posts for everyone to enjoy. and to motivate each other.
The winners were chosen by Mr Richard Durance, who volunteers at the school.
The challenge organiser, teacher Mrs Jenny Palmer, said: “ Mr Durance was a perfect candidate for this.
“Not only has he volunteered, hearing readers in school for the last six years, but he has completed many extreme challenges himself.
“During his life he has completed a staggering 141 marathons (one of which took him across the Sahara Desert) and visited extreme locations such as the North and South Pole but to name a few.”
He chose Elis Platkowski Ahmeti, 8, as the overall winner, for his picture of himself reading in a bubble-filled bath.
