A gymnast has beaten competitors nearly twice his age to win a county championship.

George Bartlett (9) of Main Street, Sutton-on-Trent, won the overall competition at the Lincolnshire County Gymnastic Championships.

He performed in all six disciplines of floor, vault, rings, parallel bars, high bars and the pommel horse.

The competition, at Spalding Gymnastics Club, was open to competitors aged up to 18, but the eldest there were 16.

George joined Lincoln Gymnastics Club when he was six.

He became interested in the sport through his school, Muskham Primary School, and initially attended a club in Newark.

Earlier this year George won the under-ten age group at the East Midlands Gymnastic Championships and was 11th in the national championships at Newcastle in the summer.

He goes to Lincoln five days a week and trains for a total of ten hours each week.

George said: “I was really surprised to win.

“I was up against boys who are 15 and 16. They’ve been doing it a lot longer than me.

“I love gymnastics. I teach myself the moves on my trampoline then I move on to the floor.

“Some things come quite naturally but some things I find quite hard.

“I like doing all the daring stuff. You have to be quite strong.”

George said he enjoyed floor work the most and was very good at handstands.

He is a keen sportsman and also plays basketball, football, rugby, hockey and rides horses.

His father, Mr Phil Bartlett, said George had always been very agile.

“He’s very keen. He loves it,” he said.
