The Newark Crusader, based at Newark Marina, celebrated its 1,000 passengers of the season
A charity group providing boat trips to community groups has carried its 1,000 passengers of the season.
The Newark Crusader, completely operated by volunteers, carried a group of 12 from the Ashmere Care Homes for a two-hour river cruise from the Newark Marina.
In the same week, the charity boat completed its 100th trip carrying a community group from Newark and Sherwood Distirct.
Trustee James Wilkinson said: “The covid pandemic had a big impact on many of the care homes and community groups for the elderly and disadvantaged in the area as well as for our small charity.
“It has taken some time, but it is very pleasing and rewarding for us to reach our 1,000th passenger and our 100th trip this week, with still a few weeks before the season ends.”
The trips offer something for everyone, from getting up close and personal with wildlife to learning about the history of the town on the waterways.
The Newark Crusader is a small charity based at the Newark Marina that provides affordable pre‐booked cruises on the River Trent from Newark Marina for the disadvantaged, elderly, those with learning difficulties or special needs, community and educational groups.
Bookings organiser and volunteer Ross Haddow said: “ We have a group of 26 volunteers who give their time on different days to enable groups of up to 12 elderly and disadvantaged passengers to enjoy a two-hour summer sailing on the river either morning or afternoon.
“It is great to be busy again, and see all the smiley faces of both crew and passengers.
“Like others, we had to close for COVID, with no income, but the boat still had to be insured and maintained.
“We are also very grateful for the local community donations we receive from many sources to allow us to operate at an affordable rate.”
