Pub and restaurant the Caunton Beck up for sale after owners decide to call last orders

A cherished village pub has been put up for sale after its owners decided to call last orders and retire from the hospitality industry.

Property consultant Everard Cole is bringing the freehold interest of the Caunton Beck to the market.

The Beck has been owned and operated by Valerie Hope and her family since 1998.

Valerie and her husband Michael founded the famous Wig & Mitre in Lincoln in 1977, but following the sale of the Wig last year, Valerie has finally decided to retire from the industry.

The Caunton Beck is a free house and fine dining restaurant in the heart of the lovely village of Caunton, near Newark.

The village is located just off the A616 and is easily accessible, being just three miles to the east of the A1.

Originally a 16th Century hostelry, the building is full of rustic charm still retaining some original features. While the business is predominantly food-led, being operated as a ‘gastro-pub’, it also exhibits strong wet sales.

The Beck has an open plan restaurant-bar, area that can be separated into different areas, with around 100 covers in total.

In addition, the property boasts two en-suite apartments (one two-bed and one one-bed studio), which have recently been used as letting bedrooms.

To the exterior, the Caunton Beck has a small lawned area and a paved terrace to the front with external seating for approximately 60. A large carpark also to the front provides parking for around 32 vehicles.

The family have worked hard to survive the trials of the covid pandemic and took the opportunity afforded by the various lockdown restrictions to continue investing into the property and completely refurbished the trading areas.

Everard Cole director Jon Heald said: “The Beck is a stunning property in a very sought-after village. The property boasts a wealth of character features. It will be a very sad day when Valerie finally does retire from the hospitality industry, but the sale presents a tremendous opportunity for a new owner and provides a great platform to take the business further.”
