After a spectacular flypast over Buckingham Palace to celebrate 100 years of the RAF, nine jets from the Red Arrows turned the sky red, white and blue over a nursery at Staunton.

The aircraft were returning to their base at RAF Scampton after the RAF 100 Flypast over London on Tuesday.

The head of the Montessori Nursery School at Staunton, Mr Robert Staunton said: “After the flyover in London and the significance of the day I am astonished that our little school was part of this historic event.”

All of the children gathered outside to wave at the Red Arrows as they streamed overhead at 3.45pm.

There is a memorial at Staunton to the crew of a Lancaster bomber who died when the aircraft came down in the second world war.

The Red Arrows — one of the world’s premier aerobatic display teams — were among 100 planes that took part in the RAF 100 Flypast, representing 100 years of the RAF.

They included Spitfires, Lancasters, Chinook helicopters, and the new F-35 fighter (its first public viewing).

Twenty-two Typhoons spelt out 100 as they also flew over Buckingham Palace.

Thousands of people were out on the streets of the capital to watch the spectacle.

The display was watched by the Royal family and the Prime Minister.

As reported in last week’s Advertiser, a number of RAF transport and airborne early-warning aircraft overflew Newark as part of rehearsals for the main event.
