Newark Parish Church hosts workshop for young singers for the Royal School of Church Music’s International Chorister Day
Choirs from Newark and Nottingham joined together for a musical workshop.
It was organised as part of the Royal School of Church Music’s International Chorister Day.
The workshop at Newark Parish Church included singers from the church choir, alongside a group from St Barnabas Catholic Cathedral in Nottingham and the children’s choir from St Mary’s Church in Nottingham.
Some of the children who went along to the workshop experienced singing in a church choir for the first time.
“It was amazing to have the church filled with sound from this talented and hard-working group of young people,” said Stephen Bullamore, director of music at Newark Parish Church.
“They sang their hearts out.”
The workshop was led by local professional singer, Ruth Massey, accompanied by Stephen Bullamore on the piano.
The day ended with a short service, in which the assembled group sang O Sing Unto The Lord by Noel Rawsthorne and A Clare Benediction by John Rutter.
A recent grant from the Cathedral Music Trust alongside funding from the Magnus Educational Foundation enabled the parish church to employ two professional musicians to deliver the high quality training session for the youngsters.
As part of the workshop, choristers received free singing and piano lessons alongside learning life skills such as development of communication and teamwork.
