People encouraged to support towns and take part it Christmas events taking place in Newark and Southwell
The Christmas lights switch-on in Newark launches the festive season of events across the district this weekend – and the public are being urged to show their support.
Over the next few weeks there will be festive markets, lights switch-ons and themed events across the district.
Hundreds of people are expected in Newark Market Place on Sunday for the Christmas lights switch-on, which takes place at 4.45pm followed by a fireworks display.
Before the big moment, the market will be filled with music from 11am alongside the Christmas charity market and fun fair.
Newark mayor Pamela Ball said: “The Christmas light switch-on is important, from the point of view of the community coming together, to celebrate the start of the Christmas season.
“Let's make it an enjoyable family and friends day out as well as enjoying the spectacle, it’s also about supporting local businesses where we can.
“I know, for many people, it’s been a tough year, but before pressing that button on your phone or laptop, maybe have a wander around town and see what gifts you can buy locally.”
Newark's traditional Christmas market will take place on December 9 from 9am until 3.30pm.
The festive markets will carry on through the month and on December 10, joining the Christmas spirit, Steampunk will be hosting a Christmas market on market place from 10am until 6pm.
The Steampunk group will be leading a torchlight procession from Kirkgate until Market place at 4.45pm.
Paul Peacock, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “This year is set to be extra special in the district as there’s lots of festive events to get invovled with. From the Christmas Lights Switch-on in Newark to the Christmas markets in Southwell, there’s lots to see and explore.
“Our independent stores in Ollerton, Edwinstowe, Southwell, Newark and other towns and villages are planning for a thrilling year and we’re also providing free car parking in Newark on weekends between Sunday 26 November and Sunday 31 December.
“Most of these events are free to the public too which will help with all the increasing costs which we’re all experiencing at the moment.
“I encourage all residents and visitors to our town centres to take advantage our fantastic events programme, free car parking and use this as an opportunity to shop locally in our amazing independent stores and take part in some of the exciting events taking place this year.”
In Southwell, the traditional late-night shopping event takes place a week today featuring music and attractions.
It is followed on December 9 by town’s lantern walk organised by Southwell Town Council and the National Trust will take place around The Workhouse and Infirmary.
Town council chairman Martin Scott said: “Southwell Town Council, its residents and businesses, look forward to welcoming everyone to the numerous events this festive season. There’s plenty to see and enjoy.”
