Christmas lights switch-on in Newark Market Place to go off with a bang
Newark Christmas lights switch-on event is set to go with a bang on Sunday.
The line-up for the Newark Market Place-based event has been released.
The lights themselves will be flicked on at 4.45pm, accompanied by fireworks.
The action begins at 11am when the Christmas market and funfair opens.
There will be performances by school choirs from 11am to 11.30am, the Shaw Mind Foundation Community Choir then takes centre stage for a five-minute performance, at 11.45, before school choirs return to the stage for 20 minutes at 12.05pm.
It is the turn of YMCA Digital — The School of Peculiar Music at 12.40pm for ten minutes.
They are followed by The Hot Dogs Brass Band for 20 minutes from 1.05pm; Rock Choir perform from 1.40pm, again for 20 minutes.
It is the turn of the Georgie Hanson Band at 2.15pm, performing for 25 minutes when, after a switch-over, Zuzka — The Greatest Showgirl will wow the crowd for 25 minutes from 2.50pm.
The Tenor — Joshua Daniel then takes the limelight from 3.25pm to 3.50pm.
It is then the turn of the Newark three-piece band The Business who come on stage at 4pm and finish at 4.30pm, 15 minutes before the big finale.
The funfair shuts at 5.30pm, bringing the festivities to a close.
The free event, which usually attracts a crowd of several thousand into the market place, is brought to the people of Newark by the town council.
A community carol concert inside Newark Parish Church immediately follows.
Town council leader Dennis Jones said: “We have put together a great entertainment line-up for this year.
“We have focussed on mainly local acts, which should appeal to a wide range of tastes and cater for all age ranges.
“This year we have changed the layout of the market place creating more space in the middle so that people can see the entertainment, fireworks and the curtain of lights in safety and with more comfort than previous years.
“It should be another fantastic day, I am delighted that the town council continues to provide this much-anticipated free event and I hope that once again there is a bumper crowd to share in this wonderful community event.”
Every Sunday from before Christmas is free parking at any carpark in Newark operated by the district council.
